A 12-year-old boy, Nico Antic, remains in critical condition after being attacked by a shark at Shark Beach in Vaucluse, Sydney.
Nico, who was swimming with friends near a rock-jumping spot, was bitten on his legs by what is believed to have been a bull shark. One friend jumped in to help, while others pulled him onto a nearby rock platform, where he lost consciousness.
Emergency responders performed CPR and applied tourniquets before Nico was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital. He was placed in an induced coma, underwent surgery, and received several blood transfusions. Nico is a former Nipper with North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club.
A fundraiser set up by family friend Victor Piñeiro has so far raised $65,000 to help cover upcoming expenses for the Antic family.
Piñeiro shared that “despite all efforts, this heartbreaking event has led to the worst possible outcome,” emphasizing the devastating impact on the family.
This attack is part of a recent string of shark incidents around Sydney. Nearby, an 11-year-old boy survived a shark bite that damaged his surfboard, and a male swimmer in his 20s was also attacked at Manly Beach, currently in critical condition.
Authorities have closed all Northern Beaches until further notice.
Witnesses report bull sharks were involved in the first two attacks, with one shark sighted at approximately 1.5 meters long.
Authorities continue investigations to determine the species involved in the third incident.
